OCUUPY NATION...or whatever it is called

I should really look up the proper name but...
I'm too tired from working all day.
You know what I am talking about.
The 99% and the 1%.
Surely there are people in between...like maybe me and you.
I am just not feeling it to tell you the truth.
I kind of understand the concept but not the principle.
Or maybe I understand the principle but not the concept.
I did see one thing I did understand the other day that made me chuckle.
One of the Wall Street guys held up this sign
OCCUPY A DESK
Now that I understood.
I would love to hear everyone's opinion on this...nicely please.

I saw that yesterday, too - that was the funniest thing about this whole occupy Wall Street situation :)

From my perspective - without that 1%, I would be without a job, so I've got no gripes...

Patricia said...

I agree with you. Occupy a desk... yep, that is funny.

I guess I don't see how occupying an area to make a statement, trashing it, urinating and damaging property, is supposed to solve something. Exactly what kind of statement does that make?

The Wildwood said...

I am with you on that one, you said it very well, and yes, I believe we are in the middle also.

I listened to a radio show yesterday. The narrator talked to the guy with the sign.
He was not part of the Occupy crowd.
He was protesting the occupy movement.
He and his brother and a few other people were telling the Occupy crowd to get jobs.
They are tired of the 'gang' doing nothing.

And frankly, when the Occupy people start talking about blowing things up, I am tired of them, too.

I realize we need more jobs (we have two 20-somethings living at home because of the economy); but I don't have any answers other than to keep voting in new people every election until something good comes of it.

Have a blessed weekend. ♥

I can understand why. I can understand what they are trying to accomplish.....it's just sad that there isn't a better way. If enough people stand up for what is "right"...things can change. Just look at what happened with Bank of America and their planned fees on debit cards. If that would have gone through without people (a LOT of people) causing a noticeable uproar and closing their accounts, every single other bank in the nation would have done the same. We can't afford any more "fees".
So I know why and I applaud them for what they are trying to do...but I'm sad at how it's having to be done. I wish there could be a better way to handle this.

I think what they first SAID they were trying to do and what they REALLY want to do are entirely different. In the beginning, most of us could agree with at least some of what they said. However, as it went on, it became clear that the group was made up of basically two subgroups, the closet socialists who started it all, and opportunistic homeless people who saw a way to cash in on the situation. I think it's time for rubber bullets.

Rebecca said...

I like the "occupy a desk" sign and think we're on the same page. I like the rubber bullet idea, too. (Don't know if that falls within your limits of "kindness" - but if so, then rubber bullets it is!)

"Occupy Now"
:-)
The 99% includes all of us who aren't in the 1% of the most wealthy people in our country. The idea is that those 1% buy our politicians and dictate what laws are passed for all of us. For me, that 1% decides if we should get our social security checks and MediCare. For those who are still comfortable from having worked hard all their lives, those 1% decide where the stock market goes, what countries we trade with, and what we buy and what we think and what we do. For the comfortable, it will take a bit more time. Just my opinion is all.

trailercamper said...

It is likely one of the funniest things I have seen. The idea of occupying the traffic lanes during rush hour doesn't win a lot of friendly favor.

fernvalley01 said...

seriously feel like I am living under a mushroom, they are getting little or no press here and I have yet to figure out (or try to) what they are all about

Joyce Ann said...

I am confused as to why they think it is Wall Street. They need to make their changes with their votes, it is the politicians who make the laws that allow the Wall Street greed.

Sherri B. said...

I'm old enough to have seen that 'movie' before...the names may have changed but the story line is the same..'the rich', 'fat cats', 'you owe us'.....etc..I didn't buy it back then and I don't buy it now! Here's my answer. Have goals, work hard, help the helpless, be honest and educate yourself about our country and those running for positions and then VOTE! - Thanks for bringing this up, you brave girl. xo

sure sounds like all the major cities have their own 'occupy' sites going on..our's is filled with homeless people in tents..one death from a drug overdose..supposedly they are getting evicted on Monday..we will have to wait and see if it actually happens!!

I am so in the middle.
I kinda thought it was cool at first...like maybe the first week. But now I'm just plain irritated.

We work dang hard for every dime and I'm sick to death of the "handout mentality"

Ya, occupy a desk, a floor, a cash register, an Emergency Room, a class room...........do something.

Well, here in Birmingham AL... They tried to have an Occupy Birmingham. 3 people turned out the first Afternoon & Night.. Then by day 3 they had 12 people. They have been marching on the street in front of Wells Fargo Building. They signs are say: We want our share!!, and Where is My Money!! They have been trying to get our students at UAB ( Univ AL @ Bham) to march with them. This is a Medical teaching school and most students are not even Americans... lol So I guess the 12 will march on...Sherri B said what I was thinking... We have a lot of jobs available in Alabama. A lot of our Mexicans have moved north. But A lot of Alabamians will not do the jobs that are left open. They want more money... A Lot more money. They can make more money and welfare & unemployment. I will get off my box now... lol Sorry..

Debbie Doughty said...

I'm with Sherry B... I thought this cartoon was funny too, it shows an older WW11 vet talking to a young "99" percenter. He tells the kid, "When I was your age we occupied Europe."

Kris Watson said...

I think the people who are (allegedly) living in those tents (therml photography showed most of them to be empty) are what I like to call useful idiots. They want a cause, but thevast majority of them have no real working knowledge of what they are protesting. From interviews I have heard of the protesters, they basically want a completely free life, including a lodging, food, and education. They expect the 1% to pay for it, because somehow the fact that the 1% has money means they ought to give it to the 99%.

I tend to pay really close attention to the big names that get associated with protests, movements, etc. This is not, as the Tea Party is, a "grass roots" organization. Someone is in charge. And some very interesting names turn up when you look at the supporters. Like.....

David Duke, former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Why? Because he hates Jews and the word around the protest is that Jews control Wall Street. Really? http://www.breitbart.tv/david-duke-endorses-occupywallstreet/

Oh, and of course there is Van Jones, a communist who served in the Obama administration, until word got out that He was advising the president.

And what about The American Nazi Party? They are BIG supporters. And the poster children for antisemitism.

Let's not forget that OWS also was endorsed by the Communist Party USA. And Hezbollah, the Chinese Communist Party, The American Socialist party, the American Democrat Party. And President Obama.

Jim and Sandie said...

I've never really figured out what their goal is. A protest without a goal and ways to reach that goal is about as senseless as clothes on a lion. When they actually come up with a plan I might pay attention to them. Otherwise, I just want them to go home and go to work somewhere.

Janie Fox said...

After visiting NY last week...it is apparent that it has become a place for a bunch of homeless/ sit-arounds to crash. The original movement has lost to them. I think they need to get jobs. Quit sitting and bitching. Hard work never hurt anyone.

Kelsie From Our Country Home said...

I am like many others and simply don't understand what they truly want...I know I am not in the 1%...But I am not sure I want to be associated with the 99% or if we should be.

Thank you for asking this question, I am glad I am not the only person that does not get it.

But I do understand "Occupy a Desk"...Do you think if they quit outsourcing production overseas and reopened factories here, those that are occupying the parks would take those jobs??

I don't make fun of the folks who have lost jobs. Our daughter's best friend from high school, who is a highly intelligent young woman, lost her job, and had to move back home with her parents. She's TRIED looking and looking for another one, but there just aren't any out there. Please, really...it isn't the fault of some of these people that their jobs have been eliminated.

Manzanita said...

There is a quick way to clear them out. Set up with signs saying, "jobs available. sign up for a job."They'd leave fast. :)

I'd like to put a shovel in the spoiled brats hands and let them do honest work for a while. I'm sick and tired...SICK AND TIRED...of someone thinking they are Entitled to something someone else has worked long and hard to achieve. I am SICK AND TIRED of 20 and 30 year olds thinking because Mom and Dad gave them everything they wanted...not just what they needed...they expect the rest of us to roll over and give it up as well.
HEAR THIS BRATS: when Hitler is serving ice tea in the underworld will I life a finger to help you!
As to that person occupying the White House...just because the Brats aren't smart enough to know you're buying their votes, doesn't mean the rest of us don't know. In 2012 I'm voting to send you home to Africa.
One last thought...when votes are being bought, that makes one party the pimp and the other party the prostitute.

What Rubye Jack said reflects my understanding of the movement. I'm all for protest to bring about needed change, so long as that protest remains non-violent.

I myself spent several years protesting the Vietnam War. In the beginning of these protests, some placards and slogans seemed almost to contradict one another. Varied groups protested together with their needs and their valid complaints. Finally all this coalesced into a protest that ended the war.

The CEOs of our nation and the Wall Street executives and the politicians in Congress need to wake up and understand that the American people as a group want to participate in a Democracy that is of the people, by the people, and for the people.
We are One people, dependent on one another.

When 1% owns the airways and the newspapers and seem to have mostly disdain for the rest of us, then change becomes necessary.

The Occupy movement is a citizens' protest against unfairness, inequality and corporate domination of our political process. It's a protest against growing income inequity. It's a protest against economic and political injustice. It's a protest against political, economic, and social conditions that overwhelmingly favor the privileged few, the one percent. Love seeing them use their first amendment rights -- so if it's in the streets to raise critical issues that need to be paid attention too - so be it! We all know there's a lot wrong, in the USA now -- You can work hard and obey the Laws and taxes but you are not going to get ahead. That is wrong. And that is what so many people are so mad about right now...and rightfully so -- more then anytime in our country's history this USA is falling apart fast!

Yeah... I don't get it, either!
Love the sign you mentioned!

Debi@7Gates said...

We were talking about this the other day at work. The feeling was that the 20 & 30 year olds doing most of the protesting are a bunch of angry folks who have graduated with degrees that don't land the real jobs out there. Their angry they might not live with the material things they have grown up with Mom and Dad. They aren't making the money and living the American Dream they thought or think they should be living. I have seen job openings at McDonalds, bagal places, etc, but maybe they feel too good to take those for the short term. I've seen college graduates mucking horse stalls for $10/hr for supplemental jobs, etc. If I lost my job today, I'd take that job at Mcdonalds and be the best burger flipper I could be ~ it might lead to management! Unless you are self employed, anyone can lose their job at any point. I always have a Plan B.

Hi. Just bouncing around and saw your little vintage camper. As I live in an RV it caught my attention. :) So cute! Do you have pix of the insides?

I was speaking with my hubby the other day and asking if the occupy people don't have jobs???? I mean, how can you take that much time off?

Rob-bear said...

I can't say about your world. But in my world, the Occupiers also Occupy desks, either at work or at university. Strange thing; one can have a job and be homeless at the same time. That doesn't make sense. But it happens.

I'm the odd one. I'm retired and living on pension.

Then, there are a few troubled souls. It seems no one wants them because they're "different," they're "strange," they're "inappropriate." (Actually, they're sick.) And the Afghanistan veteran. And, . . . and. . . .

That's life in Canada when it's 0°F. We're trying to find shelter for the homeless. "Occupy Homeless Shelters," if you can get in. Or freeze to death on the street if you can't.

No, Bear is not a "happy" camper. Especially when our camp is gone.

I feel like I don't get it, either. I mean, what is the point? In Bloomington I feel it is a lot of the homeless population. I walk by there early in the morning and they are all asleep. I want to get a bull horn and shout "WAKE UP the world is up and operating!"
Have you seen the movie about how the Wall Street rich ass people caused the break-down of the economy in '08?? The name escapes me at the moment but watch it...I promise it will get you riled up. Or make you sick.

I know one of the 1% very well. He employs many blue collar workers. As the country and state have become less business friendly and taxed and fee'd him more and more, he has reduced workers and benefits. He has to support his family, too, and pay his bills and suppliers and salaries. He used to provide complete medical/dental/vision insurance for his workers, now he pays half.

As we take from the rich, we can also be taking from the middle class and poor. The rich will always be okay because they aren't afraid to work hard, work long hours, do whatever it takes to pay their bills, but they will WORK for what they need. If they still don't have enough to meet their obligations, they will lay people off, cut benefits, donate less to charities, etc.

I say, leave the rich alone, or we will all be paying for it in the long run.

Now... big corporations who are buying off our politicians and shaping our country to their design, and the dishonest, selfish, corrupt politicians, that's a different story.

I was trader on Wall Street for many years. I believe in capitalism. I believe in America. I think these people are the result of "everyone's a winner and gets a trophy for showing up" attitude. I find it amusing that 'the entitled' refused homeless people shelter and food because 'they weren't contributing' and they deposited the funds they've raised in one of the very banks they are 'protesting'. God feeds the birds, but He doesn’t throw worms into their nest. Birds have to work for food, and so do we.
